OCFP Patient Handouts: Cold and Flu Season

October 17, 2023

Regular handwashing, avoiding close contact with sick individuals, and getting vaccinated are key steps in preventing the spread of colds and flu.

As we approach the fall and winter months, you may hear the term “cold and flu season” more frequently. This phrase refers to a period of the year when respiratory illnesses, particularly the common cold and influenza (flu), are more prevalent.

During this time, the colder temperatures and lower humidity levels create conditions that are conducive to the spread of respiratory viruses. Additionally, people tend to spend more time indoors in close proximity to others, which increases the likelihood of transmission. This combination of factors makes it easier for viruses like the rhinovirus (common cold) and various strains of the influenza virus to circulate and infect individuals.

Remember that while the cold and flu season brings an increased risk of respiratory illnesses, adopting preventive measures can significantly lower your chances of falling ill. Should you experience symptoms or have concerns about your health during this time, please do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for guidance and support.
